When I was looking for a pump, my top choices were Medela Pump In Style and Ameda Purely Yours. They’re both comparable in features and reputation, and I chose Ameda for two reasons:

1. Breast milk is better protected from exposure to the environment. The Purely Yours pump accomplishes this by using a patented diaphragm to create a barrier, which protects the pump and tubing from contamination. (Ameda has obtained FDA clearance to make this claim.)

2. It’s cheaper than the Medela.

Having used this pump for almost 4 months, I confidently say that I absolutely love it. Here are the reasons why:

1. Milk goes directly from the horns (the parts that go to the breast) to the bottle (through a small valve). I like the fact that milk does not go through any tubes or the pump body. There are only 3 parts to wash (the horns, the valve, and the diaphragm), and they wash very easily.

When I started looking at pumps, I did my research and knew I would buy either this one or the medela, since I worked full-time. I decided to go with this based purely on the fact that it was lighter, you could use batteries or a car adapter and it was cheaper (I bought it for $150).

And then I thought I’d made a terrible mistake. Initially it pumped well and then went downhill! I was confused and then figured out the white valves needed changing. I did so and a week later ran into the same problem. I ended up chnaging 3 sets of valves in one month before I realized the problem was me….I was cleaning the valves with a brush which is a NONO….ooops.

Since, I finally figured that out, the pump works great. I can empty both breasts in 20-30 mins. It’s easy to carry around. the carry all is elegant and discreet and everything fits in it. The pump gives you the option to pump either one breast at a time or both breasts at once. The pump starts off with a special two-minute “let down” cycle, which is supposed to mimic a baby’s natural sucking action when she first latches on (faster, shorter sucks). After two minutes, this automatically changes over to the “expression” cycle (longer, slower sucks), but if your milk lets down sooner, you can manually change the cycles with the push of a button. You can also control the strength of the pump using a knob – a very nice feature because you can really customize the sucking strength to your exact needs and you can adjust it with the turn of a knob at any time during your session. The design of the pump is very simple – it takes almost no time to set up and break down. The Pump in Style comes with an A/C adaptor and a battery pack

I am a stay-at-home-mom and am breastfeeding exclusively. I debated on which type of pump to get given that I wasn’t planning on pumping often, just to have some extra milk for occasional bottle feeding and to freeze milk for future use.

I really didn’t want to spend this much on a pump, but there were a couple things that swayed me to purchase this:
1. The Medela brand. I researched options over and over again and I kept coming back because of the positive reviews. Other pumps had good reviews, but a lot of bad ones also. This brand seemed to have the most consistent positive reviews.
2. I plan to have more children. I figured better to invest in a good pump that I can use for several kids than a cheaper pump that I would have to keep replacing.
3. I could either buy a cheaper single pump, or go with a more expensive double pump. The trade-off is time. I felt it was worth the time saving. If I was pumping a couple times a day for a year

Medela Pump in Style Advanced Backpack with Avent bottles?

I have been doing alot of research and I think I have decided to purchase my own breastpump, I wish to breastfeed for the first year. Although it is alot of money up front I think it will be more convienent as well as cheaper than formula and renting a pump for a few months. My question is is the Medela breast pump compatible with any other type of bottle? My fiance’ and I would prefer Avent bottles but the Medela pump has the best reviews and I can’t find bottles for that pump anywhere. Also what is your experience with this pump?

I have that pump and it is great. The backpack comes with 4 bottles for storage, a cooler with ice pack and a manual pump that works great. There’s also a battery pack, in case there is not an outlet. I am really happy with the purchase. You can pump into the storage bottles and then transfer milk into the avent bottles. I know that the Dr Browns bottles will work, but I don’t know about Avent. The wide ones won’t work. Personally, though, I use either the storage bottles that were provided, milk bags or these little storage bottles

got this pump a few weeks before returning back to work. My best friend had her baby a month after me and she was able to get a Medela Lactina hospital grade pump for herself, unfortunately she was not able to breastfeed. She let me borrow her pump and I started pumping exclusively with the Lactina. I didn’t want to take her pump to work (it’s a rental, expensive to replace, and not easily carried) so I was in the market for a good work pump. I decided I would use the Lactina at home and buy another pump for myself. I naturally looked at the Medela Pump in Style, but the cost was pretty high, and I don’t care what bag it comes in or what it looks like as long as there is a bag to transport the equipment. I read lots of reviews and based on my needs, and affordability i chose the Avent Phillips Twin Pump. This decision was not made lightly, in large part because I know this cannot be returned like you would a piece of clothing that does not fit. My decision in large part was based on

- The speed is controllable right at your finger tip, great option.
- It is comfortable with the use of the breast shells.
- Parts to clean- breast shells, diaphrams, valves, horns, seems like a lot but I think that’s pretty standard and it’s not that bad.
- Love the long cord I can move around the room with the pump if I need to.
- Replacement parts easy to find on Amazon at a great price.

I was using the Medela Lactina pump till I decided whether or not I would be pumping at work. I want to first make sure that I could pump enough milk to support my little one. When I knew I could pump enough my first concern was my supply dropping when I switched pumps. My lactation consultant recommended this pump to me, so of course it was the one that I bought. Its at a great price and the pump is amazing. I love the bag. The supplies that I use everyday at work fit in it nicely and so cooler bag with ice packs and two bottles. I didn’t want a bag that was so small that I would end up carrying two by the end of the day. Its really nice and light and is made from really nice fabrics. With the Lactina it was taking me 10 minutes to pump the amount I needed for each session, with this pump sometimes it only takes me 6 minutes to get the same amount I pumped in 10!!!! Ameda or Medela breast pump?

I am going to buy a breast pump but not quite sure which one I should go with. I read bad and good reviews with both pumps and could not decide. I work full time so I need a pump does fast job, and good quality that could last for years. Is anyone has experience with both pump and wants to give some suggestions? Thanks.

The Medela is better designed for better longevity and intended for the woman who needs to pump daily at work. It will work over 3-4 babies with regular use. Ameda works better for some women, but doesn’t have the longevity. It will usually only work for 1-2 babies with regular use.
